JSGS Public Lecture ~ How can Off-Reserve Indigenous Education meet the needs of Indigenous Students?

Moderated by Rob Currie, Executive-in-Residence, JSGS, this panel will include:

In Canada, a majority of Indigenous people live off-reserve, mostly in urban settings. Between 2001 and 2016 the proportion of First Nation people living on reserve declined from 45 to 34 per cent. This fact raises the importance of off-reserve education for Indigenous people.

Education is critical if Canada is to close the earnings gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Moreover, successful reconciliation means ensuring an education system that meets the needs of off-reserve Indigenous students.

Former Prime Minister Paul Martin, through the Martin Family Initiative, has been a leader in developing new approaches for Indigenous education. A key initiative by the Martin Family Initiative has been an Entrepreneurship Program designed by Indigenous scholars for Indigenous students that is used in several Saskatchewan high schools.

To explore the issue in greater depth, JSGS is holding a panel to explore the issues, challenges and priorities to ensure an off-reserve education system that meets the needs of Indigenous students.
